Over 20 Years of Floristry Experience
My journey in floristry began straight out of school, working at a floral studio, garden centre, and pet shop called The Flower Shop. During this time, I joined the local Floral Art group, which opened my eyes to a different side of floral design. I quickly progressed through the competition levels and eventually focused on creating displays.
After two years, I moved to Wellington and joined Waugh Florist. Under the guidance of the owner, Mr. Coombes, I gained an incredible wealth of knowledge and skills for which I remain truly grateful. I later became the manager of Waugh’s Floral Studio for two years. During that time, I had the honour of creating flowers for the late Princess Diana, Princess of Wales. Working in the heart of Wellington, close to Parliament and the central city, also gave me the opportunity to work with ministers, public figures, and celebrities—all while completing the qualifications needed to become a fully certified florist.
Moving to Auckland in 1994, I knew it was time to open my own business. That was the beginning of Jan Maree Flowers—now one of Auckland’s longest-established, family-owned florists.
Our early radio advertising campaigns on The Breeze, The Rock, and Newstalk ZB were a great success, and expanding to More FM helped grow our customer base even further. These campaigns provided a strong platform for the business during key occasions such as Christmas, Mother’s Day, and Valentine’s Day, allowing us to offer beautiful seasonal flowers and gift options to thousands of happy customers.
As one of the first florists in Auckland to launch a website, we embraced online ordering early. Over the years, we updated and refined our site many times, and most recently completed a major redevelopment to create a smoother, more natural-looking, and user-friendly shopping experience with a wide range of products.
In April 2020, during Covid-19, we expanded our business to include flower wholesale, becoming the first florist to offer a click-and-collect system in Auckland. Customers can now easily order via phone or text and pick up single stems, bunches, or bouquets on their way home or when visiting friends and family.
We’ve also introduced a subscription sign-up, giving customers access to our latest weekly specials and seasonal offers.
We source fresh flowers from the market three times a week, ensuring exceptional quality and value—backed by over 20 years of buying experience that has helped us build the strong, trusted business we are today.
